Understanding FR vs. ARC Rated Clothing: What’s Best for You?

FR and ARC Rated Clothing Aren’t the Same — Here’s Why It Matters

Fire-resistant? Arc rated? You’ve likely seen both labels on safety clothing — but they’re not interchangeable. If you work around electrical systems, flammable gases, or high-heat equipment, it’s critical to understand the difference. Choosing the wrong protection could mean the difference between a close call and a catastrophic injury.

What is FR Clothing?

FR (Flame-Resistant) clothing is designed to resist ignition, stop burning once the source is removed, and limit burn injury. It protects against thermal hazards like open flames, flash fires, molten metal splatter, and brief exposure to heat sources.

Key Features of FR Clothing:

  • Self-extinguishes when exposed to flame
  • Won’t melt or drip onto skin
  • Helps reduce burn severity
  • Often made from inherently flame-resistant fibres or treated cotton blends

What is ARC Rated Clothing?

ARC rated clothing provides flame resistance and protection from arc flash hazards — a high-energy electrical explosion that produces extreme heat and light in milliseconds. ARC clothing must be tested to withstand specific levels of incident energy measured in calories/cm² (cal rating).

Key Features of ARC Rated Clothing:

  • Always flame-resistant by definition
  • Tested against arc flash energy exposure
  • Comes with an Arc Rating (e.g. 8 cal/cm², 12 cal/cm², 40 cal/cm²)
  • Must meet ASTM F1506, IEC 61482, or AS/NZS standards

The Main Difference: It’s About Hazard Type

  • FR Clothing: Protects against fire hazards like open flames, flash fire, or welding splatter.
  • ARC Rated Clothing: Protects against electrical arc hazards and also provides FR protection.

Important: All ARC rated clothing is flame-resistant, but not all FR clothing is ARC rated.

Who Needs ARC Rated PPE?

If you work in live electrical environments — such as electrical maintenance, switchboard operation, industrial installation, or mining — you need ARC rated PPE. It’s also recommended for rail and energy workers or anyone exposed to high-voltage risk.

FR is Ideal for These Jobs:

Welders, boiler makers, gas fitters, or workers exposed to flammable vapours, flash fires, or molten splash will benefit most from high-quality FR clothing. Make sure it meets AS/NZS 4824 or equivalent standards.
