Welding PPE Checklist: What You Need for Safe & Legal Work

Welding Without Proper PPE? You're Playing With Fire.

Welding exposes workers to extreme heat, sparks, UV radiation, and toxic fumes — not to mention serious injury risks. In Australia, PPE is not only a legal requirement under WHS legislation, but also your first line of defence on site. Whether you're arc welding, MIG, TIG, or oxy-cutting, here’s your essential PPE checklist to stay safe and compliant in 2025.

Your Welding PPE Checklist

1. Auto-Darkening Welding Helmet (AS/NZS 1338.1)

Protects eyes, face, and neck from arc flash, sparks, and UV/IR radiation. Look for variable shade options and a fast reaction time for all-day protection.

2. Flame-Resistant Jacket or Welding Apron (AS/NZS 4824)

Shields the upper body from heat and molten metal splatter. Must be made from FR-rated materials like treated cotton or leather for high-heat environments.

3. Welding Gloves (AS/NZS 2161.4)

Heavy-duty gloves with long cuffs are essential. They provide thermal resistance and dexterity while handling hot metal or welding tools.

4. Welding Pants or Overalls

Forget synthetic fabrics — they’ll melt. Choose flame-resistant workwear from top to bottom to ensure full-body protection.

5. Welding Boots with Metatarsal Protection (AS 2210.3)

Boots should be heat-resistant, steel-capped, and have metatarsal guards to protect against heavy objects and falling slag.

6. Respiratory Protection (AS/NZS 1716)

Welding fumes are toxic. Depending on the job, you may need a half-mask respirator, PAPR system, or full-face filter to comply with air-quality standards.

7. Hearing Protection (AS/NZS 1270)

Welding and grinding often exceed safe decibel limits. Use earmuffs or earplugs with Class 5 protection where required.

8. Welding Curtains or Screens

Protect those around you from arc flash and flying sparks. Use portable or mounted welding screens to stay compliant and considerate on shared worksites.

Extra Tip: Always Inspect Before Use

PPE that’s damaged, scorched, or worn out won’t protect you. Always inspect your gear before every shift. Replace anything that’s cracked, torn, or expired.
