PPE Fails When It’s Not Built for the Site — Is Yours Still Up to Standard?
In 2025, Aussie worksites are tougher than ever — hotter summers, stricter inspections, and more complex hazards. The problem? Most tradies don't realise their PPE has degraded, expired, or flat-out failed until it's too late. Before you put yourself, your crew, or your contract at risk, here are 5 fast checks to make sure your safety gear can still handle the job.
1. Check the Expiry Date — Not Just the Condition
Hard hats, respirators, gloves, and even safety boots come with manufacturer expiry dates. UV exposure, chemical contact, and heat can speed up degradation. If your gear is out of date — even if it looks fine — it's non-compliant and unsafe. Inspect the date codes stamped inside helmets and printed on packaging or labels. If you can’t find it, replace it.
2. Test the Seal and Fit — Especially for Respirators and Gloves
A cracked or stiff seal on your half-mask respirator means airborne risks like silica or welding fumes can leak straight in. Gloves that have lost grip, elasticity, or lining are a hazard, not a help. PPE should form a proper seal, fit firmly, and not shift during active use.
3. Inspect for Fading, Brittleness or Fraying
Faded hi-vis? It’s not just a fashion issue — it’s non-compliant. UV can weaken fibres in high-visibility clothing, helmet shells, and harnesses. If your gear is stiff, brittle, fraying, or discoloured, it may no longer meet AS/NZS standards. Bin it and replace it before an inspector does it for you.
4. Smell or Stains? It’s Time to Toss It
Exposure to solvents, paint, oils or chemicals can degrade PPE even if the damage isn’t visible. If your gloves, boots or masks smell of chemicals or show oil stains, the material may be compromised — and won’t protect you in a real hazard.
5. Look for Certification Labels (AS/NZS Only)
In 2025, WHS inspectors are doubling down on standards. If your PPE doesn’t show AS/NZS compliance, it could be pulled from site — and so could you. Don’t rely on international labels unless the product specifically states it complies with Australian regulations. Buy from trusted suppliers with clear certifications.
