What PPE Your Insurance Requires (But You’re Probably Not Using)

Insurance Covers You — Until It Doesn’t

In 2025, Australian insurers are tightening the rules on worksite claims. If you're injured or involved in an incident and weren’t wearing the right PPE, there's a high chance your insurance claim could be delayed — or denied altogether.

Whether you're a sole tradie, subcontractor, or managing a team, knowing what PPE your insurance expects on-site is essential to keeping your cover — and your income — protected.

What Insurers Expect vs. What Most Tradies Wear

There’s often a gap between what’s required under your policy and what you’re actually wearing on-site. Insurers don’t just want to see that you own PPE — they want proof that it was:

  • Worn during the incident
  • Certified to AS/NZS standards
  • Appropriate for the task being performed
  • Within expiry and in good working condition

PPE Items That Could Void Your Insurance If Missing

1. Hard Hats (AS/NZS 1801)

Expired or damaged helmets are one of the most common reasons insurers reject head injury claims. Always check manufacture and issue dates, and replace the suspension system annually.

2. Steel or Composite Toe Safety Boots (AS 2210.3)

If you’re injured without certified safety footwear, don’t expect a payout. Some policies specify that slip-resistant or EH-rated boots must be worn on certain sites or tasks.

3. Hi-Vis Workwear (AS/NZS 4602.1)

Many public liability and injury claims have been rejected due to non-compliant or faded hi-vis. Day/night reflective taping is usually required under WHS regulations — and your insurer expects full compliance.

4. Respiratory Protection (AS/NZS 1716)

Working in dusty, fume-heavy or chemical environments? If you suffer respiratory issues and weren’t wearing the right mask — your insurance won’t cover it.

5. Hearing Protection (AS/NZS 1270)

Noise-induced hearing loss claims are growing. If you can’t prove you were using certified Class 5 earmuffs or plugs, your claim may not hold up.

What You Can Do Now to Stay Covered

  • Review your insurance policy’s PPE requirements (often found in the fine print)
  • Only purchase certified PPE that complies with Australian standards
  • Track expiry dates and wear logs for PPE use
  • Train your team to wear the correct gear for every job — no shortcuts
